DT 1765 Advanced LGBTI Asylum

Join Chelvan as he shares with you detailed knowledge of LGBTI asylum and human rights law, providing you with the tools needed to make successful claims.

This course is specifically directed at addressing credibility assessment and risk on return in LGBT+ protection claims.  The training will specifically go through the DSSH (Difference, Stigma, Shame and Harm) model as a positive tool to establish Sexual or Gender Identity, or Expression; viewing these claims through the prism of the “not straight-cis enough” risk assessment.  Aderone Apata will be attending the training to provide her insight into her 13 year battle to obtain asylum based on her sexual identity.   Case examples will be provided to consolidate the training.

Chelvan is a Barrister at No5 Barristers’ Chambers in London.  He has established a reputation in LGBT+ asylum law since 2001, appearing in several of the most high-profile LGBT+ protection cases since 2005.  In November 2017, he was short-listed for the UN role of  Independent Expert on Violence and Discrimination based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.
